Vata Dosha
Vata is comprised of Air and Space and is the energy of action and moves things through our body. It is the lightest and most mobile of the Doshas. Vata qualities are dry, rough, light, cold, subtle and mobile.
Vata types tend to be slight in build with prominent joints. Due to the quality of mobility, their weight may fluctuate and sleep patterns may change. Sleep tends to be restless and light. Vata types are talkative and often use their hands while talking. They may jump around from topic to topic as their minds are constantly buzzing. They tend to think ahead instead of being in the moment. Vata types are quick thinkers, intuitive, imaginative, artistic and love adventure. They are active but tire easily. They’re eating habits are irregular as well as their digestion. Vata types are often cold and prefer warm, humid weather. When imbalanced, Vatas may become anxious, worried, insecure and fearful.
Vata types tend to have dry or combination skin that is cool to the touch. Their hair is usually on the thin side and tends to be kinky, curly or frizzy. Since Vata has the quality of dryness, skin dehydrates easily and hair is often dry. Therefore, staying hydrated and moisturizing are important. Exfoliants should be gentle and moisturizing, preferably a sugar scrub with nourishing oil.
Vata types should eat a warm nourishing diet and make sure to drink warm fluids and stay hydrated. It is important to eat at regular intervals and generally avoid fasting. Vata types should focus on cooked foods since their digestion is not strong and warm cooked foods are easier to digest. Therefore, they should try to avoid cold and frozen food. They should also ensure to get sufficient protein and fat.
Vata types benefit from keeping a regular daily routine and ensure to take some quiet time to calm the mind. Since Vata types run cold, they should keep warm and protected from wind and cold. Workouts should not be too vigorous and if they are, they should be balanced with something calming such as tai chi or hatha or yin yoga.
